Corporate and Social Responsibility

We’re proud of our corporate and social responsibility policies. We take active steps to reduce our carbon footprint – having decreased waste sent to landfill by 33 per cent and increased waste recycled by 34 per cent in the last year alone. In fact, since 2006 we have achieved a massive 13,387 tonne reduction in Arla UK’s carbon dioxide emissions.

We now use 22 per cent less water to process a litre of milk than we did four years ago and we have diverted over 558 tonnes of packaging away from the waste stream in the last two years. We have reduced packaging weight by over 315 tonnes and hope to achieve a further reduction of 200 tonnes by the end of 2008. Five of our sites are trialling bio-fuel and all of our new vehicles are built to the latest Euro IV standard – to put that into context, in 1990 a single Euro I standard lorry generated the equivalent emissions of 33 vehicles build to the Euro IV spec. We will continue to be committed to meeting the needs of society, customers and consumers in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner.

We also continue to build ever-closer working relationships with Arla Foods Milk Partnership, a unique group of 1,600 dairy farmers who supply 85 per cent of our total milk requirements. These suppliers meet our exceptionally high standards of milk production, farm assurance and animal welfare, and in return we give them access to the liquid milk market and the premium price associated with it.

This is just a snapshot of what we do as a business to meet globally recognised corporate responsibility standards.
